How to See Edit History in Google Sheets
Google Sheets stores both cell-level edit history and full version history, so you can see who changed what and restore an earlier workbook state. Finance teams rely on this when several people touch the same P&L, budget, or consolidation file.
Why this matters for finance teams
Shared FP&A workbooks change constantly: controllers update assumptions, accountants fix mappings, and operators drop in actuals. Edit history answers “who changed that number?” without digging through email. Version history lets you roll back a bad paste before board materials go out.
If you consolidate several QuickBooks entities in Sheets, treat version history as a safety net while you build the model. For the live data layer itself, LiveFlow FP&A syncs actuals from QuickBooks into Google Sheets so the sheet is not a one-time export that everyone overwrites by hand. Teams that need native multi-entity books (not only spreadsheet consolidation) often evaluate Flow’s multi-entity consolidation next.
How to see the edit history of a cell
Select the cell whose edit history you want to check.
Right-click and choose Show edit history.
Review the pop-up that lists prior edits for that cell.
Use cell history when you need a quick answer on a single line item (for example, a revenue total or a variance column).
How to view version history for the whole worksheet
You can open version history in any of these ways:
Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + H (Windows) or Command + Option + Shift + H (Mac), or
Click the Last edit was… text next to Help, or
Go to File → Version history → See version history.
Then:
Review the version list on the right side of the screen.
Keep Show changes checked at the bottom if you want edits highlighted.
Select a version to inspect it.
Click Restore this version (next to the date and time at the top) if you need to roll back.
Tip: name important checkpoints (for example, “Pre-close v1” or “Board pack draft”) so the list stays readable during month-end.
Who can see version history in Google Sheets?
Anyone with edit access to the spreadsheet can view edit history and version history. Viewers and commenters cannot.
Why finance teams use LiveFlow
Edit history protects the workbook. LiveFlow protects the numbers feeding it. LiveFlow FP&A connects QuickBooks Online (and other books) to Google Sheets so P&Ls, budgets, and consolidations refresh without repeated CSV dumps. That means fewer “which version is correct?” debates, because the source data stays live while your formulas and layout stay in Sheets.
When spreadsheet consolidation is no longer enough (intercompany, multi-entity close, multi-currency books), Flow is LiveFlow’s agentic accounting platform built for multi-entity operations, including multi-currency.

FAQ
Does Google Sheets edit history show every formula change?
Cell edit history shows prior values and editors for that cell. For a full workbook rollback, use version history.
Can I use version history on a shared FP&A model?
Yes, as long as collaborators have edit access. Still assign an owner for named versions before close.
How is LiveFlow different from saving versions manually?
Version history snapshots the file. LiveFlow keeps the accounting actuals in the sheet current from your books, so you are not re-pasting entity exports into each version.
