What is the TRANSPOSE formula in Excel?

The TRANSPOSE function is used to return a vertical set of data points as a horizontal set, or vice versa. The data is entered as an array of cells either vertically or horizontally.

How to use the TRANSPOSE formula in Excel

  1. Select the cell where you want to display the outcome.

  2. Type the following formula into the cell: =TRANSPOSE(

  3. Enter the range of cells (array) after the open parenthesis and then close the parenthesis.

  4. Now press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER (this is important!)

  5. The result should be displayed with orientation of the dataset now flipped.

Syntax: 

=TRANSPOSE(array)

Case 1: When you have a set of data (single dimension) horizontally which you want to display vertically.

Case 2: If you have the data in a tabular format where you may want to display the columns as rows or vice versa.
